Question 1

What size should a GIF be for email?

Accepted Answer

Aim for under 1 MB. Larger GIFs load slowly on mobile data and may be shown as a blank box until fully downloaded. Most email designers keep GIFs between 200 KB and 1 MB.

Question 2

Do animated GIFs work in Outlook?

Accepted Answer

Most clients, including Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook on the web and mobile, play animated GIFs. Outlook for Windows 2007–2019 shows only the first frame, so make sure the first frame carries your message.

Question 3

What dimensions are best for an email GIF?

Accepted Answer

Email layouts are usually 600 px wide, so a GIF wider than 600 px (or 1200 px for retina) adds file size with no visible benefit. Lowering the size is the fastest way to cut file size.

Question 4

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. The GIF is compressed on your device using WebAssembly and never sent to a server.
