Question 1

What is a sprite sheet?

Accepted Answer

A single image holding every frame of an animation side by side. Games and CSS animations show one cell at a time, which loads faster than many separate images.

Question 2

Which layout should I pick?

Accepted Answer

Grid keeps the sheet close to square and works for most game engines. One row suits CSS steps() animations that move background-position sideways. One column is the same, top to bottom.

Question 3

How big is each cell?

Accepted Answer

Exactly the size of the GIF, and frames are read left to right, top to bottom. The badge under the result shows the frame count, columns × rows and the cell size to enter in your engine.

Question 4

Is transparency kept?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The sheet is a PNG, so transparent parts of the GIF stay transparent, and every frame is the full, finished picture rather than just the pixels that changed.

Question 5

Why is my sprite sheet too big?

Accepted Answer

Browsers can't draw images past about 16,000 pixels a side. A long GIF in one row hits that quickly, so use Grid, or make the GIF smaller with the resize tool first.

Question 6

Is my GIF uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The frames are decoded and drawn on your device, so the file never leaves your browser.
