Question 1

Which video formats work?

Accepted Answer

MP4 (H.264), WebM (VP8, VP9, AV1) and MOV files from phones and screen recorders all work in current browsers. HEVC (H.265) videos from iPhones decode in Safari and in Chrome or Edge on most computers. If a format isn't supported, you'll see a message instead of a broken GIF.

Question 2

How long can the GIF be?

Accepted Answer

Up to 30 seconds per clip. GIFs store every frame as an image, so long clips get very large; 3 to 10 seconds is the sweet spot for chat apps and social posts.

Question 3

What frame rate and width should I pick?

Accepted Answer

15 fps at 480 px is a good default. Use 10 fps or 320 px for smaller files, and 20 to 25 fps for smooth motion like gameplay or screen recordings. Frame rate and width have the biggest effect on file size.

Question 4

How do I make the GIF smaller?

Accepted Answer

Shorten the clip, lower the frame rate or pick a smaller width, then convert again. To hit an exact limit like 10 MB for Discord or 1 MB for email, run the GIF through the GIF compressor afterwards.

Question 5

Is there a watermark or a sign-up?

Accepted Answer

No. The GIF is yours with no watermark, and there's nothing to sign up for.

Question 6

Is my video uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The video is decoded and the GIF is encoded on your device, so the file never leaves your browser. That's also why it works for private recordings.
